We spoke to Rory Merchant, our Consultant who specialises in resolving service charge disputes, apportionment and property insurance.

1. If you could sum up working at SAY in one sentence, what would it be?
Working at SAY has been a fantastic experience thanks to the diverse and skilled team, enabling us to deliver top-notch service to our clients.
2. What’s your area of expertise within SAY?
At SAY, my expertise lies in the property industry, with over 10 years of experience in both public and private sectors, specialising in resolving service charge disputes and serving as an expert witness in various disputes related to service charge, apportionment, and insurance.
3. What are some current trends you are seeing from clients approaching you?
Currently, we are observing a rise in service charge costs, leading Freeholders and Owners to seek cost-cutting measures to make them more affordable, and there is also a number of leaseholders raising service charge queries, but we strive to ensure that all service charge costs are reasonable while ensuring residents receive the best service.
4. What initially drew you into the industry?
My passion for the property industry was sparked after graduating from university, and I’ve been drawn to the industry ever since, enjoying the variety and unique challenges presented by each development.
5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about your career and who was it from?
The best career advice I received was to continually learn and strive to be the best in my field whilst enjoying what you do.
6. What advice would you give future generations wanting to get into the industry?
My advice to future generations seeking to enter the property industry would be to never stop asking questions, seize every opportunity to learn, explore different aspects of the industry before deciding on a career path, and remember that the property industry is vast and constantly evolving.
