Team SAY Q&A – Shilpa Wymer

We spoke to Shilpa Wymer, our Head of Operations, who manages the operations at SAY from financial planning, management and analysis, managing business data, and much more.

This is what she had to say…

1.       If you could sum up working at SAY in one sentence, what would it be?

I love working with a team of super bright individuals who are constantly updating their knowledge so they can help clients think about a holistic solution rather than become siloed on their schemes. They’ve also been great at helping me implement changes to the business which has helped us to become much more data driven.

2.       What’s your area of expertise or day to day at SAY?

I manage the operations of the business.  The role sees me involved in all areas of the business from financial planning, management and analysis, managing business data from end to end, helping the partners and senior team achieve the business goals, ensuring systems are introduced to improve efficiency and performance, and much more!

3.       What initially drew you into the property industry?

Debra has been a friend for many years, and we’d spoken a fair amount about her business.  When I was looking for a change, we spoke and realised I would be a good match for them, but since starting I think it’s a fabulous place to be and although we’ve had challenges over the last few years (Covid, mini budget, etc) the industry has shown itself to be pretty resilient.

4.       What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about your career and who was it from?

Not a piece of advice but a lesson when I was younger. I went into a meeting and hadn’t listened to what the client wanted and ended up talking about the wrong thing.  Walking out of the meeting, my manager told me straight how I had messed that one up.  Needless to say, we didn’t get the work.  I had been so busy thinking about what I wanted to say I hadn’t taken the time to really listen, and this lesson has stuck with me.

5.       What advice would you give future generations wanting to get into the industry?

We hired some graduates over a year ago and put them through our Graduate Management Programme – it’s been amazing watching their skills develop and their confidence grow, all supported by the knowledgeable team around them. So, my advice is get yourself on a good Graduate Management Programme in the industry.
