Rianne Reading from CONDUCTOR – Head of Customer Experience

We got the opportunity to speak to Rianne, Head of Customer Experience at Conductor about her career and advice that has shaped her. Conductor manage a new resident’s journey from pre-completion to move-ins, aftercare to snags and defect management.

This is what she had to say…

1. When did you join the business?

I joined Conductor in August 2021. Prior to that I was Head of Customer Service at Ardmore Construction and Berkeley Homes. I was Aftercare Team Lead at London and Quadrant prior to Heading up the Customer Service Function at Berkeley Homes

2. What attracted you to the industry?

I have been in the property/construction industry for just over 12 years. I fell into it by chance after finishing my A-levels and a few part-time retail jobs throughout college.

3. What did you do before this role?

Customer service roles within the retail industry throughout college.

4. What has been your biggest challenge in your career so far?

Dealing with high-level, technical and complex latent defect and legal claims for a main contractor due to the scale and sensitivity of the cases. Some of these issues surrounded fire, M&E and major structural non-conformities.

5. What are you most proud of?

As a young black woman, being able to navigate in a predominantly white, male environment is what I have been most proud of within my career.

I am also grateful to be in a position to promote further diversity within the sector and to hopefully be a figure that other women (and ethnic minorities) can look to for advice, support and inspiration.

I am proud to make up the 1% of black female directors/senior management in the construction industry.

According to Construction News article published in 2021, figures indicate that about 14 per cent of the construction workforce is female and only around 5.4 per cent are from black, Asian or minority-ethnic backgrounds. This is something I want to use in my position, to support more people to feel they can comfortably go into the property industry.

6. What is the one piece of advice you wish you had earlier in your career?

As long as you are working hard and committed to personal and professional growth you will be worthy of any opportunity so believe in yourself and keep going.

7. If you could choose anyone to be your mentor, who would it be?

Karen Brady.
