The Transatlantic Multifamily Debate 2021

At the tail-end of January, Debra chaired a fascinating debate on the future of multifamily markets, looking at the key differences, challenges and opportunities for US investors looking to tap into the UK market.

The debate was hosted by Deverell Smith, and Debra was joined by Mike Altman, Chief Investment Officer at Cortland, and Troy Jahaver, Head of UK/Europe at Lincoln Property Development.

The debate had over 600 attendees from both the UK and America. During the debate, the audience was polled on various subjects, giving a unique insight into the industry’s opinion on Build to Rent and multifamily markets such as:

  • Are the returns of multifamily in the UK being exaggerated? – 51% Yes, 49% No
  • Will demand for different amenities change post Covid-19? – 94% Yes, 6% No
  • Can the customer service led culture in the US be replicated in the UK? – 80% Yes, 20% No
  • Should the term Build to Rent be ditched and be replaced with a more consumer friendly term? 82% Yes, 18% No

SAY have already received a number of messages from participants looking to further discuss the contents of the debate which is fantastic, and we look forward to keeping the conversation going both in the UK and across the pond.
